It has been another busy year so far for the engineering giant Small and Co of Lowestoft.

With lots of demanding projects already successfully completed so far in 2013 Small and Co were pleased to be chosen to undertake the fabrication as well as delivery of Crane parts for the Excalibur Drill Barge in Holland.

The images show the high-spec engineering work being undertaken by the Small and Co skilled tradesmen at the companies HQ at the Dry Dock on Commercial Road in Lowestoft.

The vessel was docked on 19/06/2012 for steel and piping repairs to skeg tank and No. 3 tank. Crack repairs were carried out to Kort nozzle, hull plating at steering flat, with temporary repairs carried out to funnel.

A new navigation light pedestal and platform was manufactured and fitted to the vessel. Additionally one Starboard and two Port propeller blades were removed with repairs and adjustments made. The blades were then re-fitted to vessel with Artemis being released on 22/06/2012.

Small & Co Steel and Piping Ship Repairs

The ex Associated British Ports vessel Humber Surveyor was docked on 07/06/2012 and whilst in dock her name was changed to EMS Surveyor for her new Owners Eastern Marine Services. Port and Starboard rudders were lowered, deep sea seals were removed, inspected and cleaned. “Nip” clearances were adjusted and the rudders were then re-fitted.

The Port and Starboard tailshaft glands were re-packed, the tailshaft checked for wear and any external propeller damage
Parts and oils was supplied. A wet service was carried out to both Port and Starboard main engines as well as the main engine starter motors being removed and sent for service as required. The Main sea inlet valve was also removed and serviced.

The Port and Starboard hulls on the EMS Surveyor were HP washed off, from keel to waterline and waterline to main deck to remove marine growth and loose paint. The vessels Hull plating was chipped and disked off from keel to main deck level. Touch up coatings were applied to bare and damaged areas, all paint coatings were applied to Owners paint specification.

The EMS Surveyor was then released on the 15/06/2012.

Ship Renaming at Small & Co in Lowestoft, Suffolk

The vessel was docked on 01/05/2012 to carry out repairs to her tanks and decks.

Whilst in dock her hull was high pressure freshwater washed off from keel to top bulwark rail in order to remove marine growth. The thruster grids were removed and cleaned and topsides washed off. Hull anodes were removed and replaced with owners new supply.

The hull of the Putford Athena was then disked and scraped in preparation for painting. Bare areas were undercoated and a full paint coat was applied over all. Rudder clearances and tailshaft weardowns were also taken.

Various steel and pipe repairs were carried during her stay in dock. The vessel was undocked on 25/05/2012

Ship Cleaning and Painting by Small & Co in Lowestoft, Suffolk

A 5 man team from Small & Co Engineering in Lowestoft attended Deep Diver 1 at A & P Falmouth to carry out repairs. The shell and deck plating, crop out and renewal of the vertical shell angle bar stiffeners was carried out, as well as the fitting of new hull attached stiffeners.

This work was carried out by Small & Co between 18/04/2012 to 04/05/2012.

Ship Engineering Teams in Lowestoft, Suffolk

The HMCC Sentinel was docked on 26/04/2012 at Small & Co in Lowestoft for a number of repairs. This vessel is only one of it’s type in the UK, used by HM Revenue and Custom and based on a design used by the US coastguard.

Repairs included the Port Stabiliser Fin being stripped out after ingress of sea water. It was then re-built with owners supply new seals, bearings and control cylinders, and backing strip was refitted to hull anode. The vessel also underwent stabiliser repairs.

The services of an electrician were supplied to cure a fault to the bowthrust unit. The work was carried out between 26/04/2012 and the 29/04/2012.

Custom Ship Engineering at Small & Co

The vessel was dry docked on 12/04/2012 for repairs to her forepeak tank and various repairs to tank vent heads. The tailshaft, rudder weardowns and crankshaft deflections were taken. There was also an inspection and repair to the steering flat was undertaken.

Meggar tests were carried out by electrical contractors and 2 batteries were replaced as requested by Class Surveyor. The vessel’s hull was HP washed with a 6000psi cannon from keel to top bulwark top rail, all loose and damaged paintwork was disked and chipped off.

Two coats of primer were then applied with a full coat of paint and anti-foul applied from keel to fender line, and one full coat of Blue top coat applied from waterline to bulwark top rail.

After all works were completed the vessel was undocked on 25/04/2012.

Ship Inspections and Repairs by Small & Co Engineering

Small & Co supplied the services of its Fabricators and Welders to Fugro Seacore this month. This work was carried out on Drilling Skate III as it was due to travel to South America and work on location at the quayside Antofagasta in Chile.

Personnel also carried out repairs to rig legs on Drilling Rig Skate III. This work was completed between 03/04/2012 and the 18/4/12.

Ship Fabricating and Welding Services by Small & Co in Lowestoft, Suffolk

The vessel was dry docked on the 30/03/2012 to carry out repairs to her tailshaft which, on inspection, had to be replaced with a new shaft. The Hull of the Putford Achilles was HP washed from top bulwark rail to keel and all sea gratings washed out to remove marine growth.

The Rudders were removed and inspected, rudder glands and packing removed, inspected and refitted by Small & Co.

All anodes on the Putford Achilles were replaced with new owners supply anodes, with various steel repairs also being carried out while the vessel was in dock in Lowestoft, until being released on 11/04/2012.

Ship Repairs and Engineering in Lowestoft, Suffolk by Small & Co

The specialist marine drilling company, Fugro Seacore brought the Barge Excalibur to Small & Co Dry Dock Engineering in Lowestoft last week in order to carry out sea fastening services for the deck equipment on the barge. The ships labour also mobilised to travel to Newhaven in Sussex.

The work was carried out between 31/03/2012 until the 01/04/2012.
